Brandy thanks for passing it on. This gives every one else an idea how much the Thanksgiving Box would cost at the store. A plus thing is we don't have to wait in the long holiday lines at the stores.

I'll probably be doing that anyway as I usually need perishables each week.

    Brandy:

My mother and I were discussing the prices of the food in the holiday box. She priced the items or similar items at the store when she went shopping and sent me her findings. She priced it by brand name and cheap/store brand just for comparison.

                                                                      Brand          Cheap
    3.5 frozen corn cobbetts                               3.79              0
    2 lbs frozen diced s. potatoes                          0                0
       yam patties    1 lb.   8 count                      2.19
    2 lbs frozen green beans                              4.18            3.58
    1 lb. frozen cranberries                                  0                 0
      can  1 lbs  cranberries                                 0               1.49
17 oz ready to cook corn bread dressing         0                 0
       2 box corn bread dressing   12 oz.             4.78            3.78
    8 ct. large dinner roll                                      0                0
       Brown & Serve  12 ct.                               2.69            1.29
    4,5  brown gravey mix                                  1.09              .50
    1 dessert pie or cake                                   8.00            8.00
    7 lb. roaster                                                  0                 0
baking hen at  99 cents lb.                       6.93
       regular chicken                                      10.43
    2.5 ham                                                       0                 0
       a 4 lb ham for 9.99                                  6.22

    brand   51.79       cheap    48.20

She may want to consider an Angel Food box for herself for the holidays. Our prices are fairly similar though I think I could snag a sale pie for less than what she has listed and I know I can get a few other things for less on sale here. I don't think I could beat the AF cost unless sales drop deeply for the holiday.

That was interesting, Brandy.  i was surprised to see how much difference there is in your prices and ours here.  For comparison, here's what we might pay in local stores:

3.5 frozen corn cobbetts  $3.50  (3-1/2 bags of 1 lb. bags of frozen corn at $1.00  per bag) (canned corn is much cheaper at .49/can)

2 lbs frozen diced sweet potatoes $1.98 (2 lbs. fresh sweet potatoes at .99/lb.--but around the holidays, the cost goes down greatly)

2 lbs frozen green beans  $2.00

1 lb. frozen cranberries $1.39 (estimated cost of Kroger canned)

17 oz ready to cook corn bread dressing  $2.50 (bag of stuffing seasoned bread crumbs as my sister won't eat the ready-to-eat kind)

8 ct. large dinner roll  $1.99 + (to splurge on pillsbury wheat frozen dinner rolls)

     brown gravy mix   $ .50

1 dessert pie or cake (sugar free)  $5.00

7 lb. roaster  $12.00 (we'd have to have a small turkey)

2.5 ham  $9.00 (kentuckian honey ham at $3.49/lb., but usually the holiday sale price is less)

    TOTAL:   $39.86

The total is just a little more than Angel Food's Thanksgiving box, but I think the prices would be a bit lower on a few of the items the closer we get to Thanksgiving.   And, we'd actually save more since I'd make the dessert. :)

It is interested that your totals LindaC went over to. Makes me want the Thanksgiving box that much more.

    Re: Thanksgiving Holiday Box

The cost for us is now down to about $36 'cause we're getting the ham (to freeze) on sale at $2.79/lb and opting for corn at .49/can instead of frozen cobettes.  I'll make the dessert--a chocolate cobbler which will reduce that cost a lot.   That total cost only applies if we got all items comparable to AFM's Thanksgiving box.  Cost for us (3 adults) will really be a lot less because we usually have turkey, 1 or 2 veggies, a potato or other starch and rolls.  The ham is for Christmas or New Year's.  And we used to never have dessert, but we'll have one this year. YUM!  The Thanksgiving box isn't a value for us, here, and we'd get a  better value buying the signature box.

    Re: Thanksgiving Holiday Box

I went ahead and order the Thanksgiving box. I will use most of it for our meal and what we don't use for thanksgiving I will work it in other meals. Knowing my kids they will want to have a turkey. I will want mash potatoes and I will cook home made rolls. I will have to figure a menu and start buying a little here and there for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

    Re: Thanksgiving Holiday Box

I was looking over my Angel Food menu for October and realised I may have all the foods I need for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's dinners covered!

For Thanksgiving I plan to use the items from the AF Thanksgiving Holiday box:

    • chicken
    • sweet potaotes
    • corn on the cob
    • dressing
    • dinner rolls
    •  I will be making a pumpkin pie myself for the dessert from pulp from the Halloween jack-o-lanterns.

     Possible Christmas menu

    • Ham from Thanksgiving box
    • corn on the cob remaining from Thanksgiving box
    • Mashed potatoes from Af potatoes and the gravy from the Thanksgiving box
    • Rolls from scratch
    • Homemade apple pie from October signature boxes
    • Pumpkin custard from the Halloween jack-o-lantern pulp

    Possible New Year Menu

    • Ham steaks from October signature box
    • cabbage and rice  from AF produce box, already cooked and in the freezer
    • Black eye peas bought on sale months ago, already cooked and in the freezer
    • green beans from Thanksgiving box
    • rolls from scratch
    • dessert from Thanksgiving box

We miss out on any turkey with these menus but that also means I have completely paid for THREE holiday meals already and need not spend anymore on them!

I actually feel relieved about not having to think about any holiday meals now or having to budget purchases in. I think missing turkey is a price I am willing to pay for less stress.

I also did a price comparison shopping at Wal Mart

7 lb. (avg.) Perdue Roaster   9.00

2 lb frozen green beans        2.48

    Brown Gravy mix                   .72
    2.5 lb boneless ham            7.50

    1 lb frozen cranberries          2.00

    1 pie or cake                        8.00
2 lb frozen diced sweet potatoes  3.38
17 ounce ready to cook corn bread dressing   1.74
    8 ct heat & serve rolls           2.00
    3.5 lbs corn cobetts (12)  2.40
    TOTAL   39.22

That's assuming the higher price of $8.00 for a cake, maybe a frozen pie would be cheaper, I forgot to check. I estimated the price of the cranberries & rolls. The dressing is for one box of Stove Top Stuffing that says it makes 6 servings. The roasters are $1.24 per pound at Wal Mart.
