It's great to see there are so many tomato lovers here! Make me feel much more at home. Also makes me think that I should have yet another wonderful BLT sandwich (with a fresh picked tomato) for lunch today!

That's what I've been having! They're so good with real tomatoes.

We only got about 6 tomatoes from our plants before they died.  DH got impatient and pulled them up.  Daddy told him not to do it but he did.  Daddy just got about 12 more tomatoes this week from his and we just got an email from MIL who said she has a whole lot of tomatoes ripening.  I think our summer was too hot and now the plants are enjoying all the rain we had plus the cooler yet still warm temps.

    Re: Tomatoes

I was having such a great year for tomatoes, after having several bad years.  About a week ago, my plants seemed to die overnight - they got all grey and wilted.  Maybe this is the blight that I've been hearing about.  Anyhow, I have a few in a different part of the yard that are still hanging on (now that I have a taste for a BLT).  Was able to can much more than I did last year.  So overall, its been a successful tomato year.

Since I've canned these tomatoes, and since they have since died - should I be concerned about eating the stuff I canned?  I am very careful when I can and follow the instructions religiously.  But if I canned tomatoes that were infected but not showing symptoms yet - should I not eat them?

From everything I've read, I don't think there's any danger. The blight (a fungus), if that's what it was, shows up right away. The spores can fly on the wind for miles, so it came in from somewhere else and quickly settled in. If you canned tomatoes and ate them before that time, they were fine. You might want to do some research instead of just taking my word for it, but that's what I've gleaned from reading about it over the summer.
