    National Magazine Exchange strikes again

Today I received another of those letters telling meI am now a Finalist in their Sweepstakes (lol). They as usual gave a number to call to confirm my ID number.

The woman answering was pleasant, much less of a hard-sell than the men were. She said "You now are qualified to get a new Dell computer, free.

Then: "What major credit card to you use, and what bank account?" I said I preferred to not give out that information.

"Well,. the computer has just a minimal monthly charge of $35.00, and we have to have a valid checking account to give you this." I said "Then it isn't free, is it? HHow many months does this payment go on?"

"I have no idea, but the printer and TV that come with it are free. And now I'll transfer you to someone who will inform you about more valuable free gifts we are giving you to thank you for being a major credit card holder." She was careful to say "No purchase necessary to qualify for the sweepstakes."

    I declined and said Goodbye.

    I get it now.

A shredder is your best friend when opening the mail.  And the shredded paper goes around the plants.  Now whenever we get junk mail, we say happily, "Look, these nice people sent us some free mulch!" Wink

Mulewagon, what a good idea! I will be able to mulch my garden and several others by the end of the summer!

Seaturtle....     I work for National Magazine Exchange (I've been here 10+ years).  The offer you are referring to was with Blue Hippo (for a computer w/ free printer etc.).   We have not worked with Blue Hippo nor offered any type of computer or electronic item for over 3 years.

In addition, we do not ask about your bank account.  We only ask if you have a major credit card such as Visa or Mastercard.   If and only if you say yes, then we move on to a magazine offer and other upsells.   Again, there are no computers in the offer channel and haven't been since the end of 2005.

Caliope, I edited your post to be less inflammatory. You're welcome to post, and we appreciate the input from the other side of the question, but please be polite in your responses.

     Caliope,

Thank you for that information. Does this mean that it is not the Exchange calling me after all?

I have been most pleased with the magazines I am receiving, so I was puzzled at these repeated sales attempts. And since your post, I must apologize for my original post. From the call, I thought it was the Exchange offering the computer.

This is how scammers are so successful. They take legitimate and familiar names of companies, change one word or spelling and proceed to wreak havoc. As we can see how much trouble and confusion is caused by these scammers caused just by reading the last three posts.

Seaturtle -- there are a lot of companies that Blue Hippo (and other vendors) partner with in the magazine and book industry.  As was pointed out by Toni, a simple word change can easily make a legit company appear scam-like.    We get a lot of letters and emails and phone calls from people all over the U.S. that have been duped into various scams and think National Magazine Exchange is the culprit.   There are several companies such as Reader's Exchange, Magazine Exchange, National Reading Exchange, National Reader's Service, America's Reader's Service, America's Choice Readers, etc. etc. that sound very similar to each other, but are not affiliated.

NME does not call outbound unless an established customer initiates a contact due to a billing issue and we have a bad address for them.    So, to answer your initial question, NME is not the company calling you.     Hope this helps!
