    Cat Scratch Fever

I know what a great bunch of creative people peruse this site.... does anybody have a home remedy to make cats not want to scratch on furniture?

    Thanks,

No home remedies but in the past I have used the herbal no scratch spray (I think it's a scent they don't like or something) and provided the cardboard box scratcher.  They really liked the cardboard box scratcher (has corrugated cardboard inside that they can scratch).  Both were fairly inexpensive if I remember correctly-the box scratcher was around $5 and lasted for many months and the spray was around $8 and I never ran out of it.

    Good luck!

Some cats don't like foil.  Can you put some by the popular spots so they have to step on it to get there?  Duct tape in loops like little mines may work too.  With cats you just kind of have to find what they don't like.  Most of mine hated the foil then I got this one who thought it was a gift from heaven.

    Re: Cat Scratch Fever

Mine have stopped scratching the house altogether since I got them the cardboard scratch pads. Put catnip on them, get a few large ones and put them around. Sticky tape will work too, but duct tape will leave a residue. Mine also got their foot pads stuck on it, and eventually clawed it down.

This has also worked for me every time - protect the scratched area. I get the boxes of Industrial Strength Velcro at WalMart, cut off pieces to cover the areas, then stick it on (just one piece, not joining the Velcro). IT sticks, hard, to anything slick, and they can scratch it all they want - it's so tough they don't make a dent. And when they learned it was there, they stopped there, too. I guess it's not a satisfactory surface for sharpening paws.

You could also try bringing in a log (make sure there are no bugs on it, of course, lol).

I never had any results with the Off sprays. I'd check with your vet on this, whether the hot pepper is safe or not. Cats will not go near citrus smells, either.

There is a very good site called "The Cat Site."  There is a board specifically for behavioural problems. I'd recommend signing up there and posting. Lots of information there.

One last thing - never punish your cat for scratching. He won't make any association except fearing you. In his book, he is doing exactly the right thing by sharpening his claws. I doubt a spray bottle would help any, since he won't know why he's being punished. I do find that a sharp NO and clapping my hands will eventually educate them.

I've been long-winded here, but with 7 cats, I know how they can destroy things. But they can also be trained. I hope you have good luck with this.

There are also those soft claw-covers you can get.

Wow, 7 cats!  Man o Man -  I tip my hat!  I have the spray, she only scratched one time after I sprayed there, maybe it will work.  But.. I did LOVE the tape mine ideas.  Me and my DD went around and put  little loops all over everything.  Duct tape could really hurt if it got stuck, so I just used packing tape.  Its not so sticky.

Thank you everyone. I will keep you "posted".  ;-)  I love the ideas.  I think she can be trained but her kitty is only 4 weeks old, so we have a long way to go.

I am feeling less stressed tonight than I did last night.  Baby is safely put in a box she can't climb out of and momma is coming and going in and out of box.  Baby is already eating hard food and drinking water.  I haven't seen her nurse yet, so I think she is done.  She might be 5 weeks old!  Pretty independent little critter.  I really hope she gets her mommy's disposition... one of the sweetest cats I have ever seen!

I love them already and just want them to fit.  I can deal with cat box and fur and whatever, but not wrecking furniture!  ;-((((

Kittens can nurse up to 3 or more months. I would doubt that she is finished even if she is eating food. It is a comfort thing just like babies that like to suck. If she doesnt nurse enough now, she will suck on cloth items in your home. Babs

Mamie had a problem with this and we would tell her no and then take her to her safe scratching place and stroke her back when we placed her in her safe scratching place, and spoke sweetly to her. Took some patience and a lot of repetition, but for Mamie it worked. Good luck!

When I read the title, I thought that this was about car scratch fever that you can get from a cat scratch. Be careful with cat scratchs on people. clean and use some first aid cream and keep and eye on them that they dont get infected. Babs
