    Good Housekeeping

    Publisher: Hearst Books

This is a nice little cookbook which has recipes that even Tracy/Latenightleader and Deborahmichelle would like. There are several vegetarian recipes and they sound pretty good to a meatlover like me. It was $7.95 in the USA and $9.95 in Canada in 2006. This makes it very affordable !Inflation fighter

The cookbook is divided up into sections for the Introduction; Meat, Poultry, and Seafood; Vegetarian; Pasta and Grains; and the Index.

One of the things I especially liked was the way each serving was broken down for each serving of calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

About the only thing I think that most of you would change in the recipes is substituting dried beans that you'd cooked for the canned beans. This would reduce both the sodium as well as the cost per serving.Inflation fighter

I'm not sure if it is still in print or not, but I think that you could get it on inter-library-loan or at a used book store.

Mom didn't like the recipes so I never used it. I found it again last night. I was going to offer it to someone until I realized that I wanted to keep it.

    Gayla,

    You're very welcome.

Sometimes the best cookbooks are not as expensive as the Food Network cookbooks. My friend, Nancy, who owns the local bookstore says that she has trouble selling the cookbooks that cost over $25.00 because people prefer the less expensive cookbooks.

Dear Virginia Needlewoman, This is a book that I'll get out of the Library, & decide whether I want to buy.  I have a boook from 1997 called GREAT-TASTIING 99CENTS RECIPES:  MONEY-SAVING MEALS, &, frankly, I haven't yet used it (picked it up at a thrift store), but your s sounds better, as it is from such a reputable source.

Dear All, My copy came iin to the Lilbrary on Sat, & I picked it up today.  Its list price is $7.95.  Worth-while aspects are the spiral binding that makes it easy to prop the recipe you want up on the counter, & recipes that look MUCH more appetizing than those on the SNAP/Food Stamps recipe list (http://recipefinder.nal.usda.gov/ ).  Most of the ground meat recipes can just be replaced with Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) by vegetarians.  More problematic for me are the dishes that call for cheese, since I have to either use vegan or out-of-sight-priced-&-alwaays-full-fat Kosher cheeses.  (The vegan melts -- if you get the right brand -- but doesn't taste quite right.)  There are many types of cheese that you simply can't get vegan or Kosher such as Pecorino Romano.)  Some of the substittuions that would be necessaary for me -- "fish sauce" contains trefe/non-Kosher oysters is an example -- would bring the cost of the meal way above $1, although if I cooked the same meal on a number of occasions, the amortization would make it worthwhile.  Meat analogues, such as mock-chicken, are another factor that would bring most of htese recipes way over $1 for me.  I think that this book is much more useful to non-vegetarians; it isn't worth the price, to my mind, for the few recipes I would try from it.  Yours in Hiiim, Deb

deb, can you make a sauce?

    http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/48418

that's LA area Chowhound, but I'd bet SF's asian markets are better, shuold you decide to simply buy. (But that could be because I love NorCal and loathe SoCal)

Cheese I have pretty much given up with. I do have a sample of tofu ricotta I need to try, very soon.

I make a white sauce and add nutritional yeast for the fermented tang. Lazy, I know, but it works.
