I fell off the no credit wagon....

...but am climbing back on. Well, I've been trying to accomplish a couple of goals in these last few months -- one was not to incur any more consumer debt, and the other was to get some stuff fixed around my house. It turns out that I over did it on the latter, leading me to fail at the former.

I had a flurry of stuff fixed at my house: new storm windows, patching holes in my soffit, sealed some flaking stone on my stoop, got a new garbage disposal, and some burnt out outlets rewired. Nothing especially glamorous, but things that have improved my quality of life. I knew how much money I had, but I kept thinking I'd get a little extra somewhere.... turns out that was not a good way to think. Not only did I not get a little "extra" I also am earning about $20,000 less this semester than I thought I would.

So I took out a cash advance on my credit card for living expenses, since I blew through savings for all that house stuff. Then I had to get my car fixed for $500, and I charged it. So I'm really not in the place financially that I expected to be right now, but I'm very grateful that I have enough money to live FRUGALLY through the end of the year. I'm going to use my unexpected free time to work on a writing project (that I hope to sell one day), and to try to drum up more business for the new year.

It's disappointing, because that other money would have really put me in a great place financially, but I'm really really grateful that I have enough to get by for a while. I learned a good lesson about not counting my chickens before they're hatched...

Since your putting your blog out there, I'm going to assume that you would like commentary. I'm about to make some comments that I know you're not going to like.

"I learned a good lesson about not counting my chickens before they're hatched... "

Did you really?

I see in the title "Yankee 2.0" but what I've read too often in this blog is simply wishful thinking combined with impulse purchases.

Egads - a credit card advance?  For living expenses?

You lost your real job that paid living expenses.  It's not a minor set back that you tap into credit cards for.

Do something, anything real other continue to await the miracle on the horizon. Apply for an government aid if you can.  Sell that expensive house.  Get a job now - don't blow the time on the wish that you'll be able to sell a writing project.  Even Stephen King had a day job for a long time.

I'm not saying any of the above decisions are easy.  No meaningful decision ever is.  What I am saying is that typing up a blog post about how you're all better now is not meaningful progress.  (Yes, you've admitted a problem, but you've admitted as much several times.)

Let's face it: you blew through your safety net for house improvements that could have easily been delayed or eliminated.  I lived with non-working outlets for years (with small children no less).  With the sole exception of the roof, nothing was an emergency, *especially* when your Dean warned you that you might not have enough enrollment in the fall.  (What a great blessing to know...)

I'm completely aware that I'm saying here is to make difficult choices, but to be honest I don't see how you ever get out of the holes you've made for yourself if you don't stop digging them.  Good luck to you.

Hi Frugal Fun,

I guess I wasn't completely clear about my situation -- I do have a job (three, actually, including the community college teaching job which happened after all), and have enough to live frugally (my idea of frugality does include functioning electricity) through the end of the year. The additional $20,000 that I was planning on this semester (September through December) would have been a big extra help to put towards savings and more home improvement.

I'll have the cash advance paid off when I get my first paycheck from the college (we don't get paid until the semester is well underway), so I guess I don't feel that my situation is as dire as you do. Thanks for your concern for my well-being, and thanks for reading my blog!

I'm glad you've got electricity again, too.
