No more dining out!

I like to make pronouncements. It's easier for me to adopt or give up something altogether, rather than piecemeal. So my latest pronouncement is this: I'm not going out to eat anymore, unless I'm away from home and can't prepare something myself.

I'm a vegetarian, so my dining out options are limited. I'm also a really good cook (well, I like my own cooking better than restaurant cooking). I like to cook, I really really enjoy it. And lastly -- why should I spend $7.00 for a salad, when I can make a better one for about $1.50?

My final meal out cost me $20.00 - for an order of french fries (not very good and kind of burnt), an ear of corn on the cob (mediocre), a blah salad, and a really good dessert, plus tip. I would rather use that sawbuck for something special, so I was glad my farewell meal was only fair.

Now the challenge will be declining firmly but politely when friends invite me to go out to eat with them (not an everyday occurance, mind you, but once a month or so I probably get a local invitation to eat out). I love to entertain and will gladly host a big dinner party, but will hope I can get away with just saying "no thanks" to invites to meals away from home....

Do other people refuse to eat out on economic grounds?

Well, no not yet. But it's about to be an area I'm going to have to start budgeting. LOL. We don't eat out often (like you, I enjoy cooking, think I do a good job and realize the financial benefits of eating at home). I cook each night (do lots of freezer meals), bring leftovers for lunch, even eat breakfast at home. So eating out isn't a daily thing for us. But we do eat out more often than I think we should and, I'll admit that, when we do - we go all out! It's one of the few "date" type activities DH and I get to enjoy together. Therefore, I don't want to cut it out all together. But I think that it would be much better to plan/budget a set amount of dinner dates out and then avoid it any other time. I've spent this year keeping track of my grocery expenses and I think that next year I will include the budgeted amount for eating out with that expense.

I agree - eating out (whether it's $10 here and there for lunch or an expensive dinner out) is a big budget buster! Plus, my way of thinking is that I can do the work myself and have a much tastier meal at home for a lot less money! Even more expensive dishes like steak, seafood, etc. can be made at home for a whole lot less. It just takes planning ahead.

This is something I struggle with endlessly. I don't plan ahead and then woops....it's dinner time. I make vows to not eat away from home and then before I know it I'm in some drive-thru. One problem is I don't like to cook although I can cook a pretty decent meal, I never want to cook. We just keep trying to cut down on food away from home and it is all about the cost. It just costs too much!

I used to go to a Chinese restaurant, as I really like Chinese food. Then I realized it cost too much. I looked for recipes of my favourite foods on the internet and found them, cooked them in batches, and each time I felt for China food, I just took a ready meal out of the freezer. Now, that worked well for a while, though I could not really get the 100% right taste on the food, no matter how detailed the recipes were.

Therefore I really enjoyed the advice here on the Dollar Stretcher some time ago, which said: "order take out of the entree but do the side dishes at home".

Excellent advice!!!

I now enjoy REALLY GOOD restaurant entrees and make any side dishes and starches at home! It still gets much cheaper than eating out!

It's not that I refuse to eat out it's that I really can't afford to eat out so people know not to ask now.
