&lt;p&gt;Uncle Ed certainly seems like a caring and generous individual who could, perhaps, love his nephew better by allowing the 51 year old nephew to stand on his own rather than propping his nephew up.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;$300K is, indeed, quite a lot of house for most parts of the US. It being their first home, the couple might not realize that all the expenses aren't only included in the house note (taxes, upkeep, maintenance, improvements, decorating, etc). If the couple has calculated they can afford the note it does not necessarily mean they can afford the lifestyle of owning a $300K home.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I'm glad you pointed out the peril of using the 401(k) as a downpayment. Coming up with a quick $31K repayment due to job loss (layoff, firing, medical leave of absence) will probably be next to impossible when the household is down one salary already. &lt;/p&gt;
