Why I Like Thanksgiving

I think that Thanksgiving is one of the most useful holidays of the year. The reason is simple. Thinking about the things that I'm thankful for is good for me. It reminds me of how fortunate I am. It reminds me of those that I love. The more I think about the things I'm thankful for the happier I get!

And, the opposite is true, too. By focusing on the good things in my life I don't have time to think about the things that would add stress to my day.

So I like Thanksgiving. It's almost guaranteed to be a happy day!

Keep on Stretching those Dollars!

Gary

I too like Thanksgiving, now even better than Christmas.  There is only food shopping involved, no gift shopping, no wrapping, little decorating. It's just laid back fun and food. There is just too much stress involved with Christmas.  Edey

I like the celebration of harvest -- cooking good things while all the good things are stocked. And, coming right at the end of the hectic harvest season, I can use the day's rest, too (even with the cooking; after all, I cook every day, but most days I work, too!)

I agree - T-Day is now by far the favorite.  No presents, no endless pressure to buy, just a focus on gratitude.  It's what Christmas should be.

Unfortunately, my immediate family or in-laws do not focus on the spiritual meaning of Christmas, so the "only" thing left is presents.  I've been on a decluttering kick for the last decade and with children, I struggle with volumes of unneeded toys at this time of year.  (My personal preference would be to give them a toy or two more evenly spaced throughout the year.)

I also deal with relatives, who, at times have taken our family's collective need for order and space (even our young DD notices when things are "messy") as a personal insult when we've gotten rid of toys.  I "do" the holidays for the kids but the seemingly endless focus on material goods by those close to me has tarnished a great deal of the magic for me personally.

I love Thanksgiving, for the reasons you've delineated.

From a frugal perspective, it's a fantastic holiday and mindset: the more we focus on what we have and our gratitude for it, the less we'll feel that emptiness that folks try to fill with stuff.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

About Gary

For more than 25 years, Gary Foreman has worked to manage money effectively. Prior to starting The Dollar Stretcher, he was a financial planner and purchasing manager. While helping clients manage their hard earned money as a financial planner, he applied commonsense, time-tested techniques during the turbulent 1980’s. The experience convinced him that you didn’t need to hit the lottery to accumulate significant wealth. Following that, Gary had an opportunity to learn more about how to get the best value for a dollar spent in the corporate world. As the Purchasing Manager for a computer manufacturer, he was responsible for supervising over $10 million in annual purchases. Gary began The Dollar Stretcher website <www.TheDollarStretcher.com> and newsletters in April 1996. Over 300,000 readers benefit from the time and money saving ideas presented in The Dollar Stretcher newsletters each week. His mission is to help people "Live Better for Less". He also provides private label newsletters for companies wishing to provide money saving information for their clients and/or prospects. Gary lives in Florida along with his wife of thirty years and their two children. Much of his time is spent working with the men's ministry of his church. One of their ongoing projects is the "Holy Smoke BBQ" which sells bbq on Friday nights with the profits going to support local foster kids and orphans. When he has a free moment you’ll find him restoring a Checker station wagon nicknamed “Two Ton” or cruising in a '65 Impala SS Convertible with doo-wops playing in the background.
