Broke at Christmas may very well be the worst kind of broke, especially if you have kids. I remember one year when I was totally broke. Out of a job, staying with Mom and Dad, trying to keep my little girl in clothes... and then it was Christmas.
I can't tell you all that I did, but my sum total of spending was on a cheap picture frame. For my parents, I did a pencil drawing of my brother who had been killed in Viet Nam. For one little brother, I knitted a pair of houseshoes that he had been wanting. All the yarn I had was a skein of Christmas red and green so that's what he got.
Needle and thread, scrap material, glue and whatever else I could come up with, made Christmas that year.
And you know what? It was a memorable Christmas. It was full of love and laughter. That's what Christmas is all about, anyway. Give of yourself. Your time, your love, your talents. That means more than the most expensive gift you could ever buy.
