Simple Savings: Saving Money on Laundry

There is no way to get around having to do laundry, and even laundry soap, etc. can add up.  There are some things you can do to save money on laundry.  First, use only half as much soap as you normally use.  The clothes should come out as clean as before.  Next time, try a little less until you figure out just how much you need to get a load clean.  By doing this alone, you can save yourself half as much money as you are spending right now on laundry soap.  Second, smash some foil into a ball and use it in the dryer instead of dryer sheets. Third, only wash clothes when they are dirty.  We are so used to throwing everything in the laundry basket out of habit.  Look for any stains and smell for any odor before putting them in to be washed.

Do you have any ideas about saving money on laundry?  What works for you?

I've never heard of the tin foil in the dryer trick.  That helps with static?

It may not sound like a savings to start with but I REALLY like the new Purex crystal fabric softeners.  You put them in just like detergent, no special dispenser or using the softener compartment.  I was intrigued by the tag on the bottle that said "freshness that lasts for weeks, not days" and that you could use it on your towels too.  I tried it on several loads of clothes and was impressed.  No greasy residue or softener buildup in the washer, towels absorb as well as when I have done borax and/or vinegar washes and the freshness really does last for a LONG time!  As an example, I change into a t-shirt and shorts when i come home from work.  I can generally wear the same shirt for three or so evenings unless it gets really sweaty or dirty.  After using this product I wore my t-shirt for a couple of evenings and then wore it to do some clean up around the house that got me pretty sweaty (definitely not smelling like a rose myself).  I showered and changed into a fresh shirt.  well, the next morning (weekend) I got up and dressed without turning on the light.  After I got settled into my chair I realized that i had put on the t-shirt that got sweaty.  It still smelled like the softener!  This made it a winner for me.  It even masks my husbands cigarette odor!  This will save me money on washing things that got "not so fresh" after not so long!

Karen,  The foil helps with static in most loads.  Depending on the fabric, there may still be a load that doesn't work.  I tried it because I didn't believe it would work, and I am still doing it now and it has been months.

Bane01,  Thanks for the information on the Purex softeners.  I will have to go check them out.  It sounds like they work really well for you!  I appreciate you sharing!
