I, like many of you, am currently glued to the horrific news coming out of Newtown, Connecticut. I can't wrap my head around the terrible things that are coming to light. All I can think about are those children, those babies--their parents' babies. There are no words. There is nothing to say in the face of something like this.
If you have small children who are watching along with you, one of my favorite educators in the world, Fred Rogers, has some excellent advice for helping children to make sense of the senseless: "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my
mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find
people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by
realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people
in this world."
Please join me in praying for the families of the victims. We may not be on the scene to help, but we can be helpers all across the nation and the world nonetheless.
