Believe it or not, there is one! Because I have not been doing my usual Supermarket Sweep impression each week, I've been finding all kinds of hidden gems in our larder. Some, like the powdered Chai tea that expired in 2008, should remain hidden. But others have been delicious and unexpected additions to our meals.
For example, tomorrow morning we will be hosting some friends for brunch and offering Mimosas made with the Brut champagne (excuse, sparkling wine) that I have no memory of buying or receiving as a gift.
We've been enjoying potato latkes on several occasions that were not Hannukah, because apparently I stocked up on the Manischewitz mixes in case of a bubbie-pocalypse which would mean the end of food cooked in chicken fat as we know it.
And the one thing I simply cannot WAIT to sample is a creme brulee mix that my husband purchased sometime in the past couple of years and I've never made. It's always been easier to just eat a pre-made fattening dessert, but I'll have the opportunity to crisp up the sugar coating all by myself. (And LO will say, "And I hay-elped!")*
I think we ought to do these fasts more often. We find some of the coolest stuff.
But don't try drinking expired Chai. Trust me on this one.
