I also catagorize my pantry-one shelf for baking -one for mexican food-one for vegitables-soups-cereals/juices ect. It helps me know exactley what I need for groceries. I have a shelve for whatever we eat the most for my family/bisness. I just look -right out my list and head for the store. It saves on time.

One I highly recommend for anyone who likes fresh greens is swiss chard. Doesn't take many plants to get a lot from this since the leaves are so big. The leaves taste like a cross between spinach and turnip greens and can be cooked accordingly. I have also read that they can be harvested something like 47 weeks out of the year, so be prepared to freeze this one.

We are a family of four REALLY BIG eaters. For fun our family often unit costs our dinners -- okay, so we don't lead a real racy life; however, it reinforces math skills and helps keep our budget in check.

Unit pricing a meal has also allowed me to splurge on the cost of some meals (say something involving large shrimp or lobster -- a personal weakness) without feeling guilty. Because we've stocked up on basic components for next to nothing (sales + coupons) we can add higher priced items to the menu and still come in around $5 (total cost) for the meal.

It reminded me of my own grandma who just passed this last year. She always had a stocked pantry, a complete list of needs (very few wants and needs included groceries as well as gardening items, clothing, etc.). If she did forget something she went without for a couple of weeks until the next shopping day unless someone was coming to visit and could pick it up for her. She was gifted at reusing items in creative ways. For example, my uncle chewed tobacco (which she hated as it was expensive and unhealthy!) and she refused to let him throw out the empty containers. She would thoroughly wash them and use them to store seeds from her flowers in the flower bed for the next season or to pass on. Great ideas you gave, keep them coming.
