"The parent who has control over their child's education has the authority to make the choices in regards to methods and curriculum."
I said this in my last post about benefits of homeschooling. It's very easy to get excited about the prospects of selecting a curriculum. The difficult part comes when we look at the vast amount of choices available to homeschoolers today.
A parent new to homeschooling need not feel adrift in a sea of materials though. The key to sifting through it to find what you want is in knowing what your child and your family needs.
If your family needs a flexible curriculum that is portable then you may not want to look at options for curriculum available on the internet. If you want a relaxed or gentle approach to studies then an advanced conventional style curriculum may not be right for your family.
So..
- What kind of schedule do you have as a family now? Where will homeschooling fit in and how much time do you have for planning and instructing?
- What elements are most important for you to teach or share with your children?
- What is your child's learning style?
- What is your budget for homeschooling?
These questions may help you to sift through the methods and curriculums available to homeschoolers today.
