The School Room: Education at Home

A blog about one family's adventure in homeschooling on a budget

Homeschooling and Hurricanes

Despite my resolution to be prepared to conduct lessons after a hurricane, here we sit with lessons canceled. Instruction will resume Monday unless Hurricane Ike sends us fleeing for safe harbor again.

So what should be done to continue lessons and to preserve materials?

Our homeschooling methods call for a large number of resources so I can not hope to transport everything they need. I should prepare basic lessons that can be used anytime and anywhere with a minimum of materials and protect the items left behind.

Katrina taught me that plastic storage boxes also called totes or tubs will fare the best for water. I have two plastic tubs currently for homeschool materials. This is lacking as I really need three. I raised these off the floor in case the house did flood. Since I was short a tub, I rearranged the items to fit the most expensive and hard to find materials in the tubs. Plastic bags were used for the rest and these were then put on top the tubs.

I had not prepared for taking materials along and having substitute lessons ready. I had planned to have some review and enrichment lessons that would be stand alone and easy to complete just to maintain progression. These would need to be based on few materials and easy to carry along so I had planned to rely on drills, worksheets, activity sheets and light books that could be read in short time.

Check back next week for more blogging as we return to our routine schedules and lessons.
